PETRONAS Set To Become Global Offshore Eor Leader
25 Mar 2016

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) is set to become a global leader in offshore enhanced oil recovery (EOR) services, following the success of its pioneer project in Terengganu.

Head of Technology, Technical Global, Dr Nasir Darman, said with EOR technology, PETRONAS was able to increase production of Tapis oil field offshore Terengganu to 10,000 barrels per day from 2,000 to 3,000 barrels previously.

EOR is a process of extracting stranded oil from an oil resevoir using certain methods, including thermal recovery, gas injection, chemical injection and low-salinity water flooding.

"Apart from gaining experience, we are also developing our own EOR capabilities that can be transferred overseas when opportunity arises," he told reporters on the sidelines of the 2nd Offshore Technology Conference Asia (OTC Asia) 2016 here Friday.

Nasir said PETRONAS aimed to expand its EOR services to Mexico, Sudan and Myanmar, among others, once the global oil prices recovered.

On challenges posed by low oil price to the EOR development, he said, PETRONAS would continue to develop new technology to accommodate the current global oil and gas industry condition.

"During times like these we need an even bigger technology to take up the challenge and make sure we can implement EOR at a lower cost than what we are offering at present," he added.

Themed 'Excellence in Asia", the four-day OTC Asia 2016, which began on Tuesday, gathers oil and gas professionals from around the world to discuss on advance scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources and environmental matters.
